Community Supported Agriculture and Farmers Markets

One really good step to take to prepare for both long and short emergencies is to start to become knowledgeable about farmers growing food and raising animals in your area. On average each item of food in the store has travelled 1700 miles to get there. In any kind of emergency the supply chain could break down causing panic and chaos in the stores. Our just in time delivery is very fragile and depends on a plentiful fuel supply. Currency crisis, oil shock, civil unrest could complete disrupt this supply.

Buying from local farmers can be cheaper, healthier and supporting the local economy. Also if you are someone who has skills or products of their own you may find farmers willing to trade.
